But especially in the Corona crisis, municipal law enforcement officers are increasingly exposed to hostility and violence. The increasingly dramatic attacks have prompted the state parliament in NRW to take a fundamental decision on the direction to be taken.
Amendment Of The Law On Regulatory Authorities
Back in June, the state parliament passed an amendment to the North Rhine-Westphalia Regulatory Authorities Act (printed matter number 17/11622). With this draft, the state government is implementing a central demand of the NRW coalition: The cities and municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia now have a legal basis for using body cams for their municipal law enforcement forces and cameras in patrol cars of the law enforcement agencies. The cameras serve to preserve evidence and also have a deterrent and de-escalating effect.
Our domestic policy spokesman Christos Katzidis explains:
“This is a milestone for strengthening municipal security responsibilities and, above all, for the security of our municipal law enforcement forces. It is our duty to protect those who protect us — and that is what our law enforcement agencies do, in addition to the police, who already have body cams. Alongside the police, the municipalities are an indispensable pillar of order and security policy in North Rhine-Westphalia, as they are primarily responsible and accountable for averting danger.”
